ABSTRACT
This research is entitled “Symbols in Rappaccini’s Daughter and Young Goodman Brown: A Semiotic Analysis. The symbol is one aspect that shows something outside of itself. In this research, the writer takes the symbols in Rappaccini’s Daughter and Young Goodman Brown short story. This study aims how to identify, analyze, and classify symbols as media in studying semiotics, especially symbols in short stories. In collecting data, the writer reads the short stories of the two stories to find out the contents of the symbols contained in each story and also focuses on the symbols in the short story Rappaccini’s Daughter and Young Goodman Brown. The collected data were analyzed based on Pierce’s theory. The writer uses descriptive method in this research. The results of the study show that the symbols in the short story Rappaccini’s Daughter have three prominent symbols and Young Goodman Brown have five symbols. The two stories have some differences and similarities.
