ABSTRACT

In general, men must be partnered with women and it is a natural thing. Anything other than that is deemed taboo and demeaning. To explore how the characters Joe and Nicky can break the stigma that they are demeaned and gain equality that represent the film The Old Guard (2020), the writer utilizes Queer theory. The issue in this research is what queer characteristics they represent and how Joe and Nicky are depicted as superheroes. This research uses descriptive qualitative method so as to allow the collection of data in the form of pictures and words. Characteristics of superheroes and character theory from Boggs and Petrie as well as psychological literature approach from Wellek and Warren are used to support this research. As a result, Joe and Nicky, who have superpowers, nonetheless have vulnerabilities like other humans, and as queer characters, they are loved and embraced, but also they are still mocked.
