ABSTRACT

This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the English and Ponosakan language specifying on the process of reduplications, and the contrast of both languages to find the similarities and differences. The English data were collected from several linguistics books, thesis and journals that have been researched previously, whereas Ponosakan language are collected from informants of Ponosakan language in Tababo Village and also collected from the Ponosakan language dictionary. The descriptive method is used to describe and analyze the reduplication of both language by using theory of Mattiello (2013) and Quirk dan Greenbaum (1973). The writer makes a contrastive analysis to find out the similarities and differences of both languages by using Lado’s (1957) theory. Theoretically, this investigation is going to give a contribution in morphological analysis especially in reduplication, for development in linguistics. The result of this investigation shows that reduplication in English and Ponosakan language have some similarities and differences. The similarities between the two languages were in form full and partial reduplication, but limited to some class word. The differences be found in form, function and meaning, in English has a full reduplication and partial reduplication, whereas Ponosakan language has many of reduplication, such as: full reduplication, partial reduplication, and the reduplication with affixation, and the process of reduplication of English and Ponosakan language has function that produces certain meanings, but differents in the form of meaning. There are several typesin the form of partial reduplication in English such as ablaut reduplicative and rhyming reduplicative. In ablaut reduplicative there are several patterns in this repetition, such as: the pattern with /I/ ~ /æ/ alternation, /I/ ~ /ɒ/ alternation, and other vowels, while in the rhyming reduplicative there are several type such as: the second element starts with labial /p/, /b/, or /w/, the first element starts with a glottal /h/, and other consonants. In Ponosakan Language, partial reduplication is divided into three, namely ablaut reduplicative, rhyming reduplicative, and partial reduplicative at the beginning of a syllable.
