PENGAJARAN KOSAKATA BARU MENGGUNAKAN GTM (GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD) UNTUK SISWA KELAS 5 SD KATOLIK ST. MARKUS RAANAN LAMA

ABSTRACT

The research is conducted to teach new English vocabulary to 5th Graders at SD Katolik St. Markus Raanan Lama using GTM (Grammar Translation Method). This research aims to describe the implementation of GTM and to see the effectiveness of GTM in teaching new vocabulary. The research method used in this research is the pre-experimental method. Pre-test and post-test were used in collecting the data. Then, it was analyzed by using simple statistical calculation. In this research, the researcher applied two techniques: memorization and translation. The results of tests show that students gave positive responses towards the use of GTM. The results shown by students before the treatment of the GTM had a significant difference where at the time of the pre-test, students got an average score of 63, while the tests carried out after the treatment or post-test of the GTM increased by 43% with an average score of 90. These results show that there has been an increase which concludes that the GTM is effective in learning new English vocabulary.
