Abstract :
This research is about “Taboo Words in Eminem’s Song Lyrics of Revival (2017) and Music to Be Murdered By (2020) Albums. The objectives of this reseach are to identify and classify the types of taboo words in Eminem’s song lyrics of Revival and Music to Be Murdered By albums and to analyze the functions of taboo words in Eminem’s song lyrics of Revival and Music to Be Murdered By albums. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this research shows that from the 9 types of taboo words based on Timothy Jay’s (1992: 2-9) theory, the writer only found 8 types of taboo words in Eminem’s song lyrics of Revival and Music to Be Murdered By albums, such as : cursing, profanity, obscenity, vulgarity, slang, epithets, insulting ethnicracial slurs, and scatology. While for the functions of taboo words the writer found all the functions of taboo words in Eminem’s song lyrics of Revival and Music to Be Murdered By albums based on the Wardhaugh’s (2006: 239) theory, such as : to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, and to mock authority. The most common function of taboo words is to draw attention to oneself and the least common function of taboo words is to be provocative.
