ABSTRACT

This research entitled “Sapaan dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Melayu Ternate: Suatu Analisis Kontrastif”. It is the requirement for the Bachelor’s Degree in Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University. This research is aimed at identifying, classifying and describing Term of Address in English and Ternate Malay language. The data in English were collected from sociolinguistic books, sources from the internet movies script and thesis, while Ternate Malay language were collected from the informants. The writer used Wardhaugh’s (2006) theory to find out the address term in both languages. The writer used descriptive qualitative method from Creswell (2014) to describe and explain the problems that have been found. In English, the writer got 4 terms of address using self-names (2 first name, 2 full name, and 1 last names), 25 kinship term of address, 3 familiarity/intimacy term of address, 10 honorific/title term, 5 mockery term. In Ternate Malay, the writer collects 10 self-name term of address (5 first name, 4 last name, 3 beloved/nickname names), 17 kinship term of address, 5 familiarity term of address, 13 honorific/title term, 9 mockery term (1 based on a person’s physique, 7 based on a person’s nature, 1 based on animal names) and for the differences and similarities, the writer found 13 differences and 4 similarities. The writer hopes that this research will be useful to improve the knowledge of readers about term of address.
