“This research is entitled “Nicknames in English and Tonsawang language “(A Contrastive Analysis)”. The aim of the research is to identify and classify the types and meanings of nicknames in English and Tonsawang, as well as to analyze and describe the differences and similarities between nicknames in English and Tonsawang. Data on nicknames in English were collected from textbooks, articles, and previously researched
journals in Tombatu. Language data were collected from informants through interviews.
The collected data on nicknames in English and Tonsawang were then identified, classified, and analyzed using Przecha’s theory (1970). Finally, the data from both languages are contrasted using Lado’s theory (1957). After identifying, classifying, and analyzing nicknames in English and Tonsawang, the writer found that there are similarities in the data from both languages. Namely, nicknames can be associated with
a person’s personality and can also be derived from a person’s full name, middle name, or family name in positive situations. Additionally, nicknames in both languages can be used as given names. However, there are differences in the research data between the two languages. In English, nicknames typically consist of a baptismal name as a given name. On the other hand, the author discovered that in the Tonsawang language, nicknames are influenced by the individual’s holy book due to the presence of two different religions in the Tonsawang-speaking community, namely Christianity and Islam. A nickname serves as an abbreviation of a person’s name, making it easier for others to
address them, based 0n the types of nicknames,English consists of given names that reflect personality, family names used as given names, nicknames used a given names, and nicknames used a given name in the language. Tonsawang consists of given names that
reflect personality, family names used a given names, and given names associated with the scriptures of somebody.”
